Day 01

Negombo

Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport. You will be greeted by your guide upon arrival. Thereafter you will be transferred to Negombo (Approximately 30 minutes’ drive) which is more affectionately known as “Little Rome” and is a romantic small coastal town which is home to some of the oldest churches, fresh seafood and untouched beaches.

Day 02

Negombo - Anuradhapura

Breakfast at the hotel. Thereafter, proceed to Marawila Coconut Research Institute or similar to explore the procedures of the lands of coconut cultivations. In the afternoon, you will be transferred to Anuradhapura (Approximately 03 hours’ drive) which is the greatest monastic city of the ancient world, 437 BC-845 AD and also a World Heritage Site.
The Coconut Research Institute (CRI)
The Coconut Research Institute (CRI) is a National Institute founded in 1929 as the Coconut Research Scheme under the Coconut Research Ordinance No. 24 of 1928. The scheme established its headquarters at Bandirippuwa Estate, Lunuwila (North Western Province) and began its research activities with three Technical Divisions namely, Genetics, Chemistry and Soil Chemistry for assisting coconut growers with technical information on coconut cultivation. Since its establishment all scientific research on coconut in Sri Lanka were centered in it and gained national as well as international reputation for coconut research.

Day 03

Anuradhapura - Habarana

Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning hours, explore the Anuradhapura city. The sprawling complex contains a rich collection of archaeological and architectural wonders. After the excursion, you will be transferred to Habarana (Approximately 01 hours’ drive).
Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura is the capital city of the north central province and is one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka, famous for its well-preserved ruins of an ancient Sri Lankan civilization. It is one of the world and one of the eight World Heritage Sites of Sri Lanka. It is believed that from the fourth century BC until the beginning of the 11th century AD it was the capital of the Sinhalese. The ancient city, considered sacred to the Buddhist world, is today surrounded by monasteries covering an area of over sixteen square miles (40 km2).

Day 04

Habarana

Breakfast at the hotel. Thereafter proceed to the CIC Agri business centre to explore the agricultural site throughout the day.
CIC Agri Business Centre
CIC Seed Production Farm, the biggest seed production farm in Sri Lanka located at Hingurakgoda in the Polonnaruwa District. The total extent of the farm is around 1,300 acres out of which 700 acres are under paddy cultivation with cultivation carried out in both Yala and Maha season. The farm receives irrigation water from the Minneriya reservoir to produce high quality seed paddy. The highland area of the farm is utilized for production of perennial crops, vegetables, Agri eco-tourism and livestock. CIC Seed farm has been introducing and practicing modern agricultural technology and enhanced productivity through mechanization with protecting our traditional knowledge as well as conventional agricultural methods.
Banana Cultivation
50 acres of banana plantation has been cultivated under high technology and modern agricultural methods, for export purpose. Special, modern sprinkler irrigation system has been introduced for irrigation and fustigation.
Commercial Vegetable Cultivation
Dry zone vegetables and most of the up country vegetables are grown with incorporating modern agriculture practices and using appropriate technology. Latest introduced hybrid vegetable verities and modern irrigation system like sprinkler and drip are used to improve the production and the productivity of the land. Apart from the technology enhancement use of balance fertilizer and indigenous technology of controlling pest and disease are practiced. The produce is sold in their own super market chain and at other prominent super markets.
Paddy Cultivation
The CIC Farm is the largest seed production farm in Sri Lanka. The total extent of the paddy area is 750 acres. The full extent is used for seed paddy production. Our annual production is 130,000 bushels. The contribution to the national seed paddy production is 20%. 10 popular varieties of rice are produced which are categorized as the long, short and small grain. The two colours of the rice are red rice and white rice. Average yield is 130 bushels per acre and the cultivation period is 3.5 months a year.

Day 05

Habarana

Breakfast at the hotel. Thereafter proceed on a trekking expedition to Hiriwadunna village which ends with a Sri Lankan lunch prepared in a farmer’s house. In the evening, climb the famous Sigiriya Rock Fortress to witness the picturesque views from the summit.
Hiriwadunna Village Tour
The Hiriwadunna Village trek begins with an awesome walk along a bund of a “Wewa” or manmade reservoir. The reservoir itself, the surrounding scrub jungle, marshland and village are a hive of activity. The amazing birdlife, butterflies and possible sightings of crocodile only add to the charm of seeing the villagers as they go about their early morning tasks of fishing, or washing clothes at the periphery of the lake. Thereafter you will enjoy a Bullock Cart Ride while enjoying sightseeing of the rural village life. Your next phase of adventure will be a “Catamaran Safari” (Double paired canoe joined together with seating facility) on the scenic lake. Chance of experiencing bird watching while on the Catamaran like peacocks, green pigeons, cormorants, green bittens, variety of king fishers, eagles and many more birds, land monitors and water monitors as well. Finally you will also have the opportunity to witness the traditional meal preparation methods by the village women and partake in a preparation of the traditional rice and curry meal. After lunch, a relaxed walk back to the main road by the lake bund.
Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Sigiriya Rock Fortress is an ancient rock fortress located in the northern Matale District near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province, Sri Lanka. The name refers to a site of historical and archaeological significance that is dominated by a massive column of rock nearly 200 metres (660 ft.) high. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle the Culavamsa, this site was selected by King Kashyapa for his new capital. He built his palace on the top of this rock and decorated its sides with colourful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. The name o is derived from this structure, the Lion Rock. Sigiriya today is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site and is one of the best preserved examples of ancient urban planning.

Day 06

Kandy

Breakfast at the hotel. Thereafter, travel inland to the city of Kandy (Approximately 03 hours’ drive) which is also known as the cultural capital. This ancient city revolves around a large manmade lake, set amidst a high plateau and is surrounded with a beautiful view of lush mountain ranges. En-route, walk through a spice garden in Matale to see many different types of spices which Sri Lanka is famous for and a Batik factory where you can see the manufacture of beautiful Batik prints.
Spice Gardens
Sri Lanka has always been renowned for its spices. Over 15 different spices call Sri Lanka home and many of them are traded in the international spice market. Cinnamon especially is endemic to Sri Lanka, and highest quality ‘true cinnamon’ can be obtained here. The best way to check out and purchase the best spices in Sri Lanka is to visit the island’s renowned Spice Gardens .
Batik factories
Sri Lanka and batik industry have mixed together since centuries before and is one of the emblems of Sri Lanka. There are truly amazing designs which are made by hand, visiting a batik factory is a great opportunity to study the techniques and designs of the batik industry which is ideally matched with the tropical climate. The value of handmade batiks are high and it has unique designs and that comes down from generation to generation.

Day 07

Kandy

Breakfast at the hotel. Thereafter take a city tour in Kandy to explore the attractions, the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of The Lord Buddha, the Ceylon Tea Museum, and Peradeniya Royal Botanical Garden. In the evening, witness an exotic Cultural Dance Pageant.
Temple of the Tooth Relic
Temple of the Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the heart of the city. It is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, which houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha. Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is a World Heritage Site. The “Pooja” (Offering) times is the best time to visit when offerings & prayers are recited and the heavily guarded room is open to devotees and tourists.

Ceylon Tea Museum
The Ceylon Tea Museum, created under the auspices of the Tea Board and the Planters Association of Ceylon. Visitors are greeted warmly and given a full guided tour of the museum. The ground floor is dedicated to the 19th century machinery used to operate a pulley-powered factory. On the first floor are items associated with James Taylor, considered the founding father of Sri Lanka’s tea industry, as well as a library of old books on tea. There are shops selling tea on the third floor, while the fourth floor retains the high-flying catwalk used by the supervisor to view factory operations.
Peradeniya Royal Botanical Garden
Peradeniya Royal Botanical Garden is Sri Lanka’s largest garden with an elegant and spacious 147- acres (60-hectares). There are some 4,000 different species of plants at the garden which showcase all of Sri Lanka’s flora and representative species from around the tropical world. Luminaries as varied as Queen Elizabeth II, Marshal Tito and Yuri Gagarin have planted trees to mark their visits to the garden.
Cultural Dance Pageant
Kandyan Art Association & Cultural Centre features daily shows at 5.30 pm which showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Kandyan Kingdom. These shows essentially comprise various styles of Kandyan dance, and are quite popular with visitors to the Hill Capital. The Centre overlooks the scenic lake as it is located along its shore.

Day 08

Nuwara Eliya

Today you leave for the hills, so after breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to Nuwara Eliya (Approximately 03 hours’ drive). The weather gets much cooler and reaches lows of 16 degrees Celsius. The ride will take you past rolling hills and carpets of green tea fields. In the evening, visit a working tea factory to enjoy a cup of legendary Ceylon Tea and proceed on a boat ride on the Lake Gregory.
A working tea factory visit
Visit a working Tea Factory and be enlightened on the tea manufacturing process. Watch the tea pickers and join them if you like as they nimbly climb up the mountainside with their large baskets and pick the tea leaves, then visit the factory where you will be taken around by a staff member who will explain the process of fermentation, rolling, drying, cutting, sieving and grading of tea.
Gregory Lake Boat Ride
Gregory Lake is a serene environment, complete with a stretch of green grass and grazing horses where visitors go to unwind. Here, along the lake you will see groups enjoying a family picnic, riding horses, paddling boats or taking a leisurely stroll. One of the main attractions in Nuwara Eliya, Gregory Lake was built by Governor William Gregory between 1872 and 1877, in order to utilize the water from the Nanu Oya which runs across the town. It is said that the lake was used for water sports and recreational activities during the British period.

Day 09

Nuwara Eliya

Breakfast at the hotel. Thereafter visit the Ambewela and New Zealand Farms which offer intrepid travellers a valuable insight into the workings of a dairy farm which are both educational and enjoyable. Also visit the MILCO Highland Milk Powder Factory. In the evening, visit the Hakgala Botanical Garden.
Ambewela and New Zealand Farms
Rabbits, Cattle, Cows, Pigs, Goats and grass lands, vegetable farm, seed potatoes producing center and a reservoir are available on Ambewela farm. At 12:30 PM every day, the cows are milked through modern electronic machines. Cheese factory, Goat yard and thousands of animals can be seen in Ambewela farms. The largest expanse of grass lands in Sri Lanka are also a part of the Ambewela farms.
MILCO Highland Milk Powder Factory
The one and only Sri Lankan milk powder producing factory is MILCO milk powder factory of Ambewela which is a modern state of the art factory.
Hakgala Botanical Garden
Hakgala Botanical Garden was founded in 1860 by the eminent British botanist Dr. GHK Thwaites, who was superintendent of the more famous gardens at Peradeniya, near Kandy. The climate of the Hakgala area, where, mean temperature is around 16oC is perfect for temperate-zone plants, both ornamental and useful. In the Rose Garden, you can experience the sights and scents of these glorious blooms in their infinite variety. From here it is a short stroll to the exotic Orchid House. A special attraction here is the variety of mountain orchids, many of them endemic to Sri Lanka.

Day 10

Udawalawe

Breakfast at the hotel. Thereafter you will be transferred to Udawalawe (Approximately 04 hours’ drive). In the evening, proceed on an exciting game drive in the Udawalawe National Park which is the only national park in Sri Lanka where an elephant can be seen on every single game drive. Also, visit the Elephant Transit Home, a place which takes care of orphaned elephant calves.
Udawalawe National Park
The park is a major eco-tourism destination and it is the most famous habitat for elephants, about 400 of them are found in total. During a visit, it is not unusual to see herds of adult and young elephants – feeding, bathing and playing in natural water pools. In addition to this main attraction, the park is home to many Water Buffaloes, Water Monitors, Lizards, Sambar Deer, Monkeys and the occasional Leopard, as well as being an exciting location for bird enthusiasts.
Elephant Transit Home
The ‘Elephant Transit Home’, associated with the Born Free Foundation (UK). Here, orphaned or sick elephants are fed and cared for until they are strong enough to be returned to the wild. The centre allows visits at the feeding times of 06:00, 09:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 18:00 hours. From behind a barrier you can watch the elephants ambling along behind a keeper, into the compound where they will be fed.

Day 11

Galle

After a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to Galle (Approximately 03 hours’ drive). En-route, visit a turtle hatchery in Habaraduwa. In the evening, visit the famous Galle Fort for an evening walk on the rampart.
Habaraduwa Turtle Hatchery
The Green Turtle, Leatherback Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, Olive Ridley and the Loggerhead Turtle are among five of the world’s seven species of sea turtles that nest on the beaches of Sri Lanka. Over the past few decades, sea turtle numbers have plummeted and some of the main threats include their eggs being illegally poached for local consumption and the development activities along the coast which have had an adverse impact on nesting sites. Habaraduwa remains one of the main nesting sites for sea turtles on the south coast and the hatcheries collect the most recently laid eggs and re-bury them in protected areas.
Galle Fort
Galle Fort, in the Bay of Galle on the southwest coast was built first in 1588 by the Portuguese, then extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century from 1649 onwards. It is a historical, archaeological and architectural heritage monument, which even after more than 423 years maintains a polished appearance. The fort has a colourful history, and today has a multi-ethnic and multi-religious population. The heritage value of the fort has been recognized by the UNESCO and the site has been inscribed as a cultural heritage UNESCO World Heritage Site .

Day 12

Galle

Breakfast at the hotel. Thereafter visit the Handungoda tea factory, perhaps the closest tea plantation in the world to the sea and is also known as the Virgin White Tea Factory which produces a white tea completely untouched by human hands.
Handungoda tea factory
The process of tea plucking follows an ancient Chinese Ritual where the choicest of teas were cut by virgins who never touched the tea with their bare skin and offered the resulting produce up as a tribute to the Emperor. Handungoda mimics this tradition, although these days the ‘virgin’ concept only applies to the tea! This white tea is rich in anti-oxidants and is said to be the healthiest tea in the world. Coincidentally it is also one of the most expensive teas in the world fetching at over 1500 USD per kilo. According to the latest testing Virgin White has an anti- oxidant content of 10.11 percent, which is said to be the highest naturally occurring content of anti- oxidants in any beverage.

Day 13

Galle

Breakfast at the hotel. Thereafter proceed to Kalutara to visit the Rubber Research Institute of Sri Lanka (RRIS) which is the oldest research institute on rubber in the world and is the nodal agency in Sri Lanka with the statutory responsibility for research and development on all aspects of rubber cultivation and processing for the benefit of the rubber industry. Also, en-route to Galle back, take a picturesque boat ride through mangrove forests to a cinnamon plantation on the Madu River.
Rubber production
Rubber production was established in Sri Lanka in 1876 with the planting of rubber plants imported from Brazil. The rubber products manufacturing industry emerged in the 1950s primarily to retreat tires and the industry expanded rapidly after the introduction of free trade policies and investment promotion zones in the late 1970s. At present, the value of the rubber products manufacturing sector is five times greater than the export value of raw rubber from Sri Lanka. However, the plantation sector remains an important component as it is the 'resource base' or the primary competitive advantage of Sri Lanka’s rubber industry.
Madu River boat ride
The estuary of the Madu River is a complex coastal ecosystem of mangroves and islands. It may be one of the last remaining tracts of pristine mangrove forests. A boat trip is a wonderful way of seeing some of the hundreds of species of plants and animals - monkeys eat fruit in the trees, a water monitor lizard glides slowly through the water, and cormorants, egrets and kingfishers wait patiently on the banks, eyeing the water for prey. There are around 64 islands in the river and lagoon, from a tiny speck housing a deserted shrine to one housing 250 families connected to the mainland with a very long footbridge. You can visit an island with a Buddhist monastery, where the friendly young monks will show you a 150-year-old book made of palm leaves and how they cook on cinnamon wood on an open fire. The main occupations of the local inhabitants are producing cinnamon and prawn fishing. You will see the fishermen in their canoes lighting lanterns to attract the shellfish into their traps.

Colombo

After a leisurely breakfast, you will be transferred to Colombo (Approximately 02 1⁄2 hours’ drive) which is Sri Lanka’s commercial capital with great shopping arcades, luxury hotels & restaurants, Karaoke Bars, Casinos- which has the highest winning percentage in the world, night-clubs and other entertainment facilities. In the evening, proceed on a city tour in Colombo with some shopping stops.

Colombo is an important port in the Indian Ocean since ancient time. The traders from the middle-east used Sri Lanka as an exchange center. The Arab traders came to gather the ivory, the precious stones and spices such as cinnamons, cardamom, cloves and pepper, which were highly priced in Europe. Even a commercial city, the needs of the leisure travellers can be fulfilled with the range of activities available in the city. Departure
